Why do two people, in the exact same situation, choose completely different behaviours?

That question has driven my career for over 20 years. As a Human Resource Management practitioner, most of my journey has been in Learning & Development — helping leaders understand themselves so they can lead others well.

Early on, I built expertise in personality assessments and type indicators. They are powerful tools: I've used them to design and deliver leadership development programmes, and to help hundreds of individuals understand their own preferences and appreciate the differences in others.

But in 2018, everything sharpened when I was introduced to Heartstyles™ — a neuroscience-backed character development tool, founded by Stephen and Mara Klemich over 30 years ago. Whilst personality tools show who we are, Heartstyles shows how we're choosing to behave, and the impact those choices have on the people around us. Since then, I've facilitated numerous Leading with Heart workshops and coached leaders using the Heartstyles Indicator.

I have worked inside organizations that were very toxic, and others in which the culture brought out the best in every person in the room. The difference was never the strategy on the wall — it was leadership. Leaders who understand their own archetype, and the true impact of their behaviour on their teams, are the ones who get to choose the culture they create — rather than leaving it to chance.

I have watched leaders make lasting changes to how they show up for their people after experiencing Heartstyles. That is the work I love most: helping leaders and organizations build human-centred, inclusive workplaces — the kind people genuinely enjoy being part of.
